Surgical site infections (SSIs) are one of the most common healthcare-associated infections. It is a significant concern in cardiac surgery, leading to increased morbidity, mortality, and healthcare costs. In Saudi Arabia, the SSI rate in cardiac surgery was the highest with cardiac (CARD) and coronary artery bypass graft (CBGB) surgery. It has been estimated that approximately 50-60% of SSIs are preventable by the application of evidence-based strategies. SSI prevention is complex and requires integrating a range of measures before, during, and after surgery. This performance improvement project aims to implement evidence-based strategies to prevent SSIs in cardiac patients, ultimately improving patient outcomes.
